About Me

Dr. Tara Cayton, MD is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with expertise in cataract surgery, glaucoma management—including laser and minimally invasive surgical techniques—advanced dry eye disease, diabetic eye disease, and full-spectrum medical eye care.

Originally from Pleasanton, California, Dr. Cayton graduated magna cum laude from Macalester College in Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and Japanese Language and Culture. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree from Penn State University College of Medicine, where she served as regional campus class president and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

She completed an internal medicine internship followed by a three-year ophthalmology residency at The Ohio State University, where she was actively involved in clinical research and presented at multiple regional and national conferences.

After residency, Dr. Cayton practiced at the Cincinnati Eye Institute before relocating to the Hampton Roads area, where she now provides patient-centered, comprehensive eye care.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Cayton enjoys exploring the outdoors, traveling with her husband, and spending time with her two cats, Nellie and Orion. She also enjoys reading and discovering new local food and tea spots.
